There is one thing you should definitely think about doing before you start spreading that link into the world.  What is it you ask? Start a lens? Get a blog? What???

NOPE ~ something even more simple. You need to get a redirect for your affiliate link.

I used to think this was a step it wouldn’t really matter if I skipped ~ however  ~ I am seriously rethinking that.

What is a redirect?

A redirect is a “pretty” domain that when someone goes there it actually points them to the sales page via your affiliate link. So it seems like you’re going to www.prettysite.com ~ but you are really being redirected to www.youraffiliatesalespage.com.

What are the benefits of a redirect?

1. Decrease commission theft. This is especially true when you are working with clickbank. When people click your hop link they can easily take out your affiliate id in the link and replace it with their own, thereby saving themselves some money and stealing YOUR comission.

2. More related url. People like to see the what the link they are clicking on is about. If I’m looking at a site talking about losing weight I’d much rather see www.loseweightfasttoday.com instead of www. momtohanna.melweht. hop.clickbank.net/ ~ see what I’m saying? It instills confidence that they are going somewhere related and not whisked off to some crazy porn site

3. Sometimes product owners have to make changes.  Whether someone spams the domain name their sales page is on, thereby getting the domain banned by ISPs, or maybe they decide the software they started with just doesn’t work anymore and they decide to change to another provider, or any other myriad of possibilities. These ALL change your affiliate address.

If you have used your straight affiliate url you are going to have to go out into the internet and find ALL the places you have linked to the sales page and change the link.  Good luck with that.

However,  when you have a redirect, all you have to do is go to your domain name registrar and change the place the domain is pointing to your new affiliate link.

Why is this coming up today? Because we are facing the need to make some changes to our site, which will end up changing your affilitae id. We got to thinking and believe it will be quite doable without interrupting service, but we’re just not sure about our affiliates.

We don’t want to lose you guys, we want you to continue to make your commissions, and we know that for you to be able to do that  ~ you need a redirect.

So please, not just for this program, but for any affiliate program you are in please use redirects.

A few ways you can do the redirects.

1. Purchase a .info domain name to use. These are generally very cheap ~ less than a dollar. Realize that at GoDaddy they renew at the regular price. Hopefully you will be in profit by renewal time comes around.

2. Use subdomains. If you have hosting you can create subdomains for each product. You can’t use subdomains for Ezinearticles.com, but they work great elsewhere. If you don’t have hosting you can get cheap hosting here.

3. You can create a full redirect page on your website. (you need hosting for this one too) If you’re interested in this option we can do a “how to” post.

Depending on what you need your redirects for will help you make the decision of what kind to use.  But please, understand that using some kind of redirect is really important.

Capture your traffic on your own list before you send them to the sales page. This one action will allow you to not only make 1 sale but offer that person more than one offer over time. It allows you to build a relationship with your customers, and once they know you and trust you they are much more likely to buy from you again in the future. So instead of making 1 commission, you may make 5 or 6 or 20 who knows. It’s a good plan.

Please don’t scoff and think you can’t build a list because you can. Yes. You can.

This is a little bit advanced, and not covered in OWM, but this is the truth, and what every affiliate marketer should be doing to make the most of  traffic they get.

3. Building a list. This is one of the best long term strategies for making money online. Building a list means people have signed up to receive more information from you.  It allows you to create a relationship with your subscriber. They learn to trust you, and when you recommend a product that will make life easier for them, they are likely to listen and some of them will buy. You can build lists on any topic. The key is having a good product or offering that gets them to give you their name and email address and then keeping up with your list and continuing the relationship.

Maybe later when your electric bills come.

2. Your website will be noticed in a short period of time.

What all is involved in blogging for Affiliate marketing?

Great question ~ I have found that the things I have actually used, and loved are the things I am able to make the most sales with. I don’t know what it is, there’s just something about recommending something you love that carries through in your writing.

What I suggest, if you are going to use a blog to do affiliate marketing is to start a personal blog. You can start it on blogger or any other free platform (make sure to check terms of service about advertising and marketing on your blog ~ I know it’s against the TOS of wordpress.com and possibly today.com)

Once you have this personal blog, go ahead and talk about your life, what you do, what you love. Along the way of telling your story make sure you throw in some affiliate links.  You can do this for anything!! If you love sewing, talk about sewing and recommend the products you use to sew.

If you do affiliate marketing, tell your story, and link to the things you love and use.

If you are a dog person, talk about your dogs, and recommend products you use and love along the way.

This is the best way to get started. I know people will mock me for saying that. “You can’t make money off what you love” ~ yeah I’ve heard it before. I just don’t buy into it.

If you  love it, chances are so do other people, and who better to recommend something than someone who loves what it is. People will read and know you are for real, they will trust your opinion and they will click  your link.

I know a lot of people say go and put up a “review” blog.  Yeah, that’s an option, but how many times have you gone out looking for information and came upon a “review blog” that you knew was only a feeble attempt by an affiliate marketer to sell you something ~ no matter what. I see them all the time, and I KNOW I don’t buy from those pages, because I’m not getting the real story on the products, I’m getting the story the marketer wants to hear to get me to buy so they can make money.

Yes, if you are not into much or there aren’t a lot of products for what you love, you’ll have to branch out eventually. I don’t argue with that, BUT to get started, I say what you love is the best way to go.

** That doesn’t mean you don’t have to do any keyword research!! Keyword research is just as important for things you love as it is for things you may know nothing about. Just remember you probably have a good inside line on the terminology and how people who like that stuff search, because you are one of them!

Tips for an affiliate blog:

1.  Find good keywords for each post.  No matter what you’re talking about try to find solid keywords (good search volume, minimal competition) to use in your post title and to link to your product with.

2. You don’t have to promote something in every post. Remember, you are not only building an affiliate blog, you are creating relationships!

3. Add your blog to signature files in related forums. If you hang out in forums about things you love go ahead and add your blog to your signature. Great way to get some extra traffic to your blog.

4. Keep your blog simple, and clean. It’s easy to get excited about a bunch of different stuff and want to add it ALL to your blog ~ sidebars, footers, pages whatever. Remember the more choices people have to make about what to click on the less likely they will be to click on anything.

5. Be consistent. Make sure to post regularly and consistently, not just when you want to sell something. You don’t have to (be like me) and write 700 word posts, you can just make it a few quick sentences and let people know what’s going on with you. The more they “know, like and trust” you, the better off you’ll be.

Creating a blog can be done for nothing, and it’s a great way to let people get to know you, and sell products. I know I am more likely to buy something from someone I know, like and trust online ~ that way I’m pretty sure I will get what I expect. If you look at your buying habits I bet you will find the same.

For article marketing all you need is an affiliate link, and a domain name you can use to forward that link. You can use a .info domain for this.

Article marketing basically means creating an article ~ some interesting information on the topic or a related topic of your affiliate program. Put together an article of anywhere from 250 to 400 words on this topic.

Here are some great templates for creating articles.

How do people get to your affiliate link ~ since you can’t have them in your actual article? That’s where you bio box comes in. Your bio box is an are where you can talk about the product and provide a link to it. Your bio box is a very important element in article marketing. If you write, click here for more information and give the link ~ you are not likely to get many clicks.

However if you create an interesting bio box that entices the reader and makes them want to know more about what you’re talking about you will get many more clicks.

Now for some tips for great affiliate article writing.

1. Make sure you do some research on your keywords. You want to find keywords that you will be able to rank for i the search engines. This means they need to have a good amount of search volume ~ people looking for those words in google ~ as well as not being too competitive.  If there are a million pages competing for that keyword the likelihood of you getting on page one with just an article is slim to none. Try to find keywords with less than 30k comp ~ less than 10k is even better.

2. Write informative articles. Like I said before, make sure you provide some decent information in your articles or no one will want to click through. If you’ve given them nothing so far, why would they think you would give them anything else if they click through?

3. Submit your articles to EzineArticles.com. There are a million article directories, but right now, EZA is the best for ranking in google and getting immediate traffic to your product sales page.

4. Don’t include links in the body of your article. It’s just not the best way to do things, it may slip through the checking, but sometimes it will get blocked. If it does, you have to go in fix it and then resubmit the article and wait for it to be approved. Just don’t waste the time.

Once your article is approved ~ which can take some time ~ if you’ve chosen your keywords wisely you may find you are getting traffic and click throughs right away.

Just be aware, your articles are not likely to stay at the top of Google forever, so you either need to create an affiliate site (like squidoo or a blog) or keep submitting articles on this topic, to keep getting ongoing traffic.

Some tips for creating a great affiliate squidoo lens.

1. Have some quality content. Provide real information that the person is looking for. A great way to do this is to create a “3 tips” article. This way you teach the reader something they may not have known and then you can refer them to your affiliate link to learn even more.

2. Sprinkle your lens with non text modules. This provides visual interest and makes it easier to read through an entire lens.  Some favorite non text modules are: youtube module, talk bubble module, sticky note module, poll module ~ that’s a great one because each option on the poll can be a link to your product!!.

There are many more ~ squidoo adds new modules all the time, so make sure to look through the “all modules” section once in a while and see what’ s new.

3. Make sure you use your affiliate link in your text modules. When you link out to the affiliate page, make sure you use your keywords as the “anchor text” for the link.

~ anchor text is simply the actual words that people click on. (They are usually underlined or blue ~ you want those words to by your keywords) This will help you get your lens ranked on the search engine results page for your keywords.

4. Always have a call to action module toward the bottom of your lens. A call to action module can be the big arrow module, the most important thing module, those are my two favorites.

A call to action module is basically like telling your reader what to do next.  They’ve read your lens, and now you want them to click out to your affiliate page. Let them know that’s what they should do.

Make sure to use your keywords as anchor text in the big arrow module.

5.  If you have a related blog use the RSS feed in your lens. As we know it often takes people seeing information about your product more than once to click and buy. Why not let all that information be from you. If you have created a blog on this topic use the RSS feed in the RSS module. That way if they don’t click on your affiliate link in your lens, they may click a link from  your RSS, leading them to another of your pages where they can click an affiliate link.

6. Make sure you use your hot zones effectively. This means make sure you use your keywords ~ and links where possible ~ in the following places.

• Lens title
• all module titles
• first sentence of your introduction
• within your text modules ~ once is enough
• within a poll module if you use one
• your bio box
• tags

7. Use keywords for alt tags on your images. You can add an alt tag for your images. This will show up if for some reason someone can’t see the image. It also tells google what the image is and gives you another opportunity to let them know it’s about your keyword.

8.. It makes a lens look so much better. There are quite a few ways to add images to your lenses. You can add an image from your computer with the browse feature within a text module, and a text module with big picture, you can also use the poloroid module.

If you want to link your image to the product you will have to host the image somewhere ~ like photobucket, and then add the code to your lens.

Those are some basics of creating a quality squidoo lens. Remember, you are just recommending, tell stories, be yourself, help the person out. Get them to click to the sales page, and then let the sales page do the selling.
